This file gives brief sketches of the letters written by Lockmaster John Johnston in his quest for pensions for his staff and himself, and for the lockmaster position for his son, Matthew.
The report of the Ordnance Commissioners, Richard eaton and James Sutton Elliott, describes how they justified restoring the 1836 wage cut of the lock staff. It also provides an insight into the economic conditions of the period around 1842 and the contemporary wages available along the Rideau Corridor.
